Explanation Of Common Terms Of Led Display

It is not always easy to browse the world of LED display terminology, especially when you are new to the industry and want to buy LED displays. Here are some common LED display terms.

1. SMD

SMD stands for surface mount device. These are electronic components that are directly surface mounted on the printed circuit board, rather than welding metal pins on the lower side of the circuit board as before.

In LED display technology, the use of SMD concept is slightly different. SMD display is an LED display, in which red, green and blue diodes are packaged in a small plastic package, and the plastic package surface is installed on the printed circuit board of the display. When diodes are packaged in this way, they take up much less space, which can produce displays with smaller diode spacing and higher resolution.

2. NITS

Nit measurement is used to analyze the brightness of LED display. Nit is another word for Candela per square meter. The candela is the SI unit of brightness (metric). It is a unit that takes into account the perception of the human eye on the brightness of different colors. This makes it an obvious unit to use when measuring the brightness of the display. A candela is roughly the light from an ordinary candle.

The nit units are completely different from ANSI lumen measurements used to evaluate the brightness of video projectors and cannot be compared.

3. IP rating

This is often a two digit number that defines the sealing effect of the display. The first number represents the intrusion protection of solid objects such as dust, dirt and other elements. The second number represents the protection of rainwater and other liquids. Outdoor LED displays have a higher IP rating to withstand these elements.

4. Pitch

It is the distance between pixels, expressed in millimeters. This is a basic measure, because it defines the image quality, the minimum viewing distance of digital billboards, and it also significantly affects the final cost of LED screens.

5. Pixel

This is a typical luminous spot for each LED visualization device. It can consist of one or more LEDs (in some models, a pixel consists of 36 LEDs).
